The holiday season!!

Hey everyone!! Sorry i’ve Been MIA. I have had some major life changes!! We are currently all sick after moving across country. I haven’t been able to read much but we did listen to a few audiobooks on the road. Turns out we all enjoy Artemis fowl. As well as the land of stories books!

I’ve signed up for FOUR bookish secret Santa’s this year!!! I’ve never even signed up for one before and somehow I ended up doing four!! Because I can’t say no when my friends ask me to sign up with them! Lol I’m also doing a international holiday card exchange this year! PLUS on Black Friday I scored a bunch of signed books for myself and friends! I ended up picking up two copies of uncommon types by Tom Hanks for one friend and a stranger who said she was dying to find it! One of those copies has been shipped off to Ireland and hopefully will make it in time for Christmas! Then I got the lying game signed for one of my secret Santa gifts! Renegades for another secret Santa gift and I’m still looking for a signed book to go with the Harry Potter socks I got my last secret Santa. I’m also sending a little girl the book seekers. All my secret Santa’s get a holiday card from me as well with homemade watercolor bookmarks because the ones I bought never showed up. LOTS of my mail has gone missing during this move because apparently my address is hard to enter correctly for some businesses.

I also have several signed and unsigned books I’ll be hiding around my new area for the book fairies!

So that’s how my season is going. Besides the fact that I feel like I tried to run into platform 9 3/4 and hit the brick wall. Hopefully I will feel better soon and be able to read more! I’m currently slowly making my way through before she ignites.

Happy holidays, merry wishes and lots of love to all and anyone reading this!

May your holidays be bright! Eat some pumpkin pie for me! Eat, read and be merry!

Warm wishes- Bookish Mom

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

So let me start out by saying WOW! This book is NOT what I expected! this book is not for snowflakes!! So this book is pretty dark, if you don't like blood, gore and assassins then you will not like this book. That being said if you don't mind blood, killing and sex then maybe this book is for you. This book started off super slow and dense for me so I gave it a 4.5 stars. I found the foot notes to be extremely annoying and would've maybe liked them better had they been in parenthesis.  BUT that being said this book was DARK and glorious. And by dark I mean lots of killing and secrets in this book. Not dark as in full of rape and abuse. No rape in this book for the record. The characters are what sold it for me. I LOVE me some Mia!! She is a total badass!!! I mean this chick would slit your throat without a second thought if you decided to try and hurt her. She is a moral grey character, like the majority of the characters in this book are. They kill and murder but they do so with their own moral reasoning behind it.

I really think both men and women would enjoy this book but it is definitely for mature readers. It has a lot of gore and yes, it even has sex in it. If you don't like sex in books this might not be for you. This book has a little romance but the main plot is definitely about revenge and and killing. The romantic plot line is not the main story here at all. So if you want lots of sex and romance this book probably isn't for you.

The Characters are awesome. I enjoyed each and every character in this book. Not necessarily because I LIKED the "bad guys" but because I liked reading what they would do next. Loved the main characters in this book and their stories and learning why they do what they do. So if you want to see a BADASS female character teach everyone what a badass she is get this book. Not just ONE female is a badass either, All the characters are badasses, male and female, but none of the females are portrayed as weak or less then men in any way which I liked. The characters are most literally kicking ass and taking names. FUCK what anyone else thinks, these characters will do what they want and they will enjoy doing it the entire time.

Here's the link for Nevernight if you want it!

The sequel is now out! I have not been lucky enough to read it yet but if I love it I'll definitely post about it once I read it! It's called Godsgrave. Click HERE if you wanna check it out as well.

Much love and hope to hear you picked it up and loved it. -Bookish Mom

WARCROSS by Marie Lu

GUYS!!!!!!!! This book was soooooo GOOD!!!! I loved every second of this book!! It's a fast paced futuristic gaming book. Now I LIKE games but I don't play often and I LOVED this book so don't worry if you aren't a gamer! This book has strong characters and unique voices. I LOVED THEM. Hideo is my new book boyfriend. Emika is strong and fierce and not once does this book say "for a girl you are good" NO the whole time they acknowledge her as a person and being good at what she does, not just as a female but as a capable human being. DID I MENTION the ending???? I seriously need the next book like yesterday so I could be reading it right now!! Basically it was worth buying the book full price for me. Usually I don't buy books full price but I WENT TO HER FREAKING SIGNING (ugh so awesome, surprised not many people showed up) and got her book before the signing as my ticket into the signing line. Guys, she's so kind and humble. she was so nice. I went to a Marissa Meyer event and I love her but it was packed and she didn't give us a chance to really talk to her. Marie Lu answered my and others questions without cutting us off on time or anything. Not to mention, Lish McBride whom, I honestly hadn't heard of until the week before the signing was there to interview Marie and she signed her book firebug (I haven't read it yet) for me as well.  Anyways, Warcross is amazing, the characters are sooo good and I loved so many of them. the Plot is great and it keeps you reading and not wanting stop. The ending surprised me but the one person who I was guessing at the majority of the book I did guess right. Now I need to know the whys and hows and WHAT happens next!!! Last night Marie said this will be a ecology that will probably come out in the fall of next year. I can tell you I will be at the damn store buying my copy asap. Or going to the signing and getting my book signed. In other words- go read it. buy it, get it from the library, borrow it from a friend, whatever just READ IT!!!

Ok I'm aware I'm all over the place here but I just loved this book and have so many thoughts. Bear with me!

Here's the blurb--
For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

The daughter of the pirate king by Tricia Levenseller

Hey Guys!!!! SOOO I started and finished this book all in the same day. Let me start by saying I thought this book would be way over hyped. Although its not the very best I've ever read I throughly enjoyed it. This book has an amazing cast of characters that all are unique and have their own interesting voices throughout the story. The best part of this book for me is definitely the main character Alosa who is a total badass. I personally think she's one of my all time favorite female characters. She kicks ass and takes names and doesn't let petty shit tear her down. This book does have a bit of romance in it but I definitely think the main plot is about Alosa being awesome. the romance I liked but it didn't take away from any of the characters or make them instantly weaker like it does in many books I've read. I enjoyed the fantasy mixed in with this book and really enjoyed the pirate life. I just can't get over how awesome I find Alosa and how much I love her character, I've never read SUCH a strong female character who wasn't evil before. NOT to mention her crew is also primarily female and badass making a point that it's not just one female badass but a BUNCH of them. Overall I sincerely recommend this read to anyone looking for a badass female lead who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to take it, fight for it, and even kill for it. I also enjoyed the rest of the characters and loved that all were nothing alike and all very unique. So basically the hype is for good reason y'all. I literally emailed Tricia's assistant person asking for an ARC of her next book- Daughter of the siren queen because I can't wait to see what Alosa will do next!!!

Heres the links if you wanna check it out!! Daughter of the pirate king, Daughter of the siren queen

So get to reading my lovely readers! I'll be looking out for future books by Tricia! -Bookish Mom

what I've been reading!

Hey readers! I've been SOOOOO busy lately! I'm sorry to have neglected you. So much is happening in my life right now. BUT I'm here to telling you what I've been reading lately!

The reason I haven't posted any reviews lately other than being super busy is because I haven't read anything I've loved. I've been reading but I've had some issues with all my recent reads, so I'm going to tell you what they are and give you a small review of them.

Matched by Ally Condie- this book frankly pissed me off. I hate Insta-love, and I hate when a character betrays their best friend for no real good reason, and I hate characters that drag a good person along when they know for a fact they don't want that person but don't tell that person and continue to give that person signs they do in fact care and want them.

A monster calls by Patrick ness1 this book I went into blind only hearing is was a middle grade fantasy book. WELL let me tell you *TRIGGER WARNING for death and cancer* this book is more about death, cancer and lose than monsters. I literally cried for 50% of the book, which was beautifully written but ultimately not the kind of book I enjoy. I feel many would love this book and find healing in it. I on the other hand just found pain and hurt from this book along with disappointment that it didn't have much fantasy in it at all. it's very much in my opinion more of a contemporary book, although ONE monster is in it, two if you count the figurative monster.

Dorthy must die/the wicked will rise by Danielle Paige- Now I read the first one and wasn't impressed but owned the second book already so I thought I'd give it a chance since it was my first ever wizard of oz retelling. Now the concept of these books is great, the execution, not so much... the voices of the characters in the second book blend together because they all sound the same. nobody voice is actually unique. I didn't LIKE any of the characters in the book and wasn't attached to any one character. They all could have died at the end and I wouldn't even be upset. the best character out of the first two books got killed off before Amy even got to Oz. I just wanted so much more from this series and disliked these books so much I'll be donating them.

Ever the hunted by Erin Summerill- I enjoyed this book more than the others but didn't like the ending of the booker the way the romance played out enough to pick up the next book in the series.

The bone season by Samantha Shannon- I liked this book but it was extremely predictable and nothing at all surprised me in the least. I even picked up the next book in the series and stopped reading it a couple chapters in because I was bored.

Sythe by Neal shusterman- I loved the uniqueness of this book and will probably read the next book but it got pretty slow at times and didn't wow me or make me really think very hard about anything.

So those are the books I've read in the last two months about. Let me know what you've been reading!

Much love-Bookish Mom

I'm Back!!!!!

Hello, hello, my beautiful readers!!

I've had a broken computer for like a year now so I finally bought a new one and this time its a laptop. I got the MacBook Pro. Anyways, I've been working a ton and of course reading oh and I got engaged since I last blogged.

But I'm finally back and plan to do reviews more often! my favorite book of the year so far is still Heartless by Marissa Meyer. JEST <3 I have read 27 books so far this year though. The sweet evil series by Wendy Higgins was pretty good.  And if you have a kiddo like me that likes fantasy, my son and I have been devouring the wings of fire series.

I've also tried out a few book box subscriptions since march. I've tried owlcrate, whimsify, uppercase, once upon a book club, and the bookish box so far. Although my favorites have been owlcrate and Whimsify. Only thing I didn't like about Whimsfy is their books aren't signed which sucks for me. owlcrate is nice unless I hate the theme for that month.

So here's what I've been up to. Collecting more books for my TBR list/jar, and reading while enjoying some good food.

Thanks for reading, talk to you again soon-Bookishmom

Library books!

Hey readers I learned something new recently!! So our library locally is big but focuses on non-fiction when I prefer fiction. After searching through all the books I didn't find a single thing I wanted to read that I didn't already own. Well after months of just buying my books I was in one of my book groups and asked about audio books and someone told me to use a digital Library which I was clueless about. So after further talk and investigation I learned my library offers an app that allows me to borrow digital ebooks and audio books for 21 days just like a digital library. You don't get to keep them forever but after downloading the app and entering my library and library card number (which you need to use the app) I discovered on this app they have a ton more books i'm interested in that they don't offer in the actual library. You can also recommend a book for your library to buy to add to its digital collection although it kinda sucks because mine only alllows me to recommend one at a time and no more. When lord knows I have hundreds I could easily recommend. But I thought i would share my experience since I had no clue this existed and I've found a great way to read books for free and thus save money by only buying my favorites! The app my library uses is overdrive which has an adult section and kids section. Apparently other libraries may use different or multiple apps for their digital library and each library has different books available. So for instance I like in an average town but when I signed up my librarian told me to go to the city library and get a card there because I can also get books from them as well. So you can have a bunch of library cards and use it all on one app. Overdrive only lets me borrow 10 at a time and i'm not sure if that's per library or per overdrive account. But I'll be going to the city eventually to get me a card for there as well!

Enjoy this tidbit of information! I hope it gives you and your family the opportunity to read more and more of what you love! -Bookish Mom

My current read!

Hey readers!! I am currently at home with my son who had a snow day at school today and i'm reading the night circus by Erin morgenstein! I recently went to my first ever book launch/book signing ever! It was for wires and nerves by marissa Meyer which was my first ever graphic novel read which I surprisingly enjoyed! I went and got all my lunar chronicles books and heartless signed! I just finished the snow like ashes series by Sara Raasch which I will review for you all soon!

I have a TON of books on my to read list that o own and a ton that I don't! I JUST ordered my first ever book subscription boxes! I ordered February's owlcrate box and the quarterly box! The owlcrate box i'm highly guessing has  Caraval by Stephaine Garber in it, it does have a tote and candle with it for sure, as they posted as much on facebook! It's a circus theme that goes with the night circus which is why I finally started reading the night circus even though I've owned it for almost a year! The quarterly box has the edge of everything by Jeff Giles in it plus two other books of his choice and some bookish items! I'll hopefully be able to post pictures when I get them! Both books subscriptions I picked are YA ones, BUT owlcrate offers kid ones as well, and quarterly offers a bunch of different subscription boxes from books to food to fitness ect!

If you would like a link to buy the night circus Click HERE

If you would like to subscribe to owlcrate click HERE

If you would Like to subscribe to quarterly click HERE

If you would like to browse all kinds of subscription boxes check out CRATEJOY which has a TON of different boxes for every hobby you can think of basically and you can set it to only show ones that ship to your country or from your country!

Hope you all are well and that you haven't been sick like me and my son off and on with various bugs that make us vomit and miserable! But if you have I hope you get to read a good book as you recover!

Ta ta for now! - Bookish mom

Heartless by Marissa Meyer review

hey readers! let's start off by saying what this books about! It's a prequel to Alice in wonderland about how the queen of hearts became the queen of hearts. I LOVED this book. I loved the characters and the plot and the little details, I loved the way she recreated the world we already knew from the original Alice in wonderland and reinvented it! Gah I love Jest. I loved this book! It was like being thrown into wonderland but a NEW wonderland. More in depth and up close look at it! The characters are each unique and set in their ways. We see new sides to many characters and even find out why the hatter turned mad. I really enjoyed it but I expected to enjoy it since I've enjoyed all her other novels as well. But I was really impressed with this one because I never really cared for Alice in wonderland and it never really attracted me to read a retelling. But her lunar chronicles made me pick this one up and i'm glad I did! So if you haven't read those you should! And if you want to read this awesome retelling/ not retelling and prequel click HERE!

Tell me what you think! I originally was supposed to go to the launch for this book but didn't get to sadly because frankly I didn't have anyone to go with and it's way to dangerous to walk the streets of Seattle alone at night. So for Christmas my son got it for me! So glad he did!

Just read it and tell me your thoughts! I would add a photo but my computer is still broken! Sorry!
