The queen of tearling by Erika Johansen

Heya ladies and gents!!

This book was pretty good! Some parts did get slow or predictable. Some of the Guards blurred together for me but I enjoyed Kelsea. The fetch, Mace and Pen and their personalities. I loved Kelsea's conviction and determination and want to see her become a great queen. Parts with the red queen were really predictable for me. Dark force she uses to get stronger. Typical. I enjoyed Kelsea looking back on her teachings and finally understanding. I didn't enjoy the many mentions of rape so casually and mostly blown off by the majority of characters. I wanted Andalie to murder her husband and kill him slowly and I couldn't quite understand her protecting him. Although I've faced an abusive husband, and I got out, and I did protect him in a way by not talking shit about him to my son and allowing him to love his father, but I've also called the cops on him when I needed to.
I did want Andalie to strike back and take a stand for all the women in the book. So in a way I understand why she protected him to an extent, but I wanted her to take action. I understand in the sense that you don't want to kill your children's father and hurt them, but it's a book so kill his ass. The necklace was an interesting twist and I really want to know who the fetch is! i'm wondering if the fetch is her father or an ancestor of Kelsea's. I loved how protective Pen is and I predict a love story coming involving him. I loved mace and his fatherly role, although I didn't quite agree with Kelsea about him being a dog without a leash. I think he did the right things in protecting her. I see him as a father figure for her. I want to see what happens to all the characters in this story and how they grow and evolve! The ending was the strongest part of the book for me but i'm intrigued and will read on!

Here's the blurb!
On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen’s Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon—from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic—to prevent her from wearing the crown.
Despite her royal blood, Kelsea feels like nothing so much as an insecure girl, a child called upon to lead a people and a kingdom about which she knows almost nothing. But what she discovers in the capital will change everything, confronting her with horrors she never imagined. An act of singular daring will throw Kelsea’s kingdom into tumult, unleashing the vengeance of the tyrannical ruler of neighboring Mortmesne: the Red Queen, a sorceress possessed of the darkest magic. Now Kelsea will begin to discover whom among the servants, aristocracy, and her own guard she can trust.

Can she save her kingdom??
